No nonsense answers to questions we are often asked
When and how often do I need to apply sun tan lotion or sun cream?
There are differences in
the recommended doses for individual products but as a general rule
of thumb:
- Anytime you are in the sun between 10am in the morning and 4pm in the afternoon, whatever you are doing.
- Half an hour before you go into the sun,
- ...again after you have been in the sun for about half an hour,
- ...then at least every two hours you are in the sun, whatever you are doing.
- Remember that no sunscreen is completely waterproof so whenever you have sweated or have come out of the water, cover yourself again with sunscreen.
Incidentally, sunscreens work by scattering or absorbing the UV rays. In the process they invariably generate free radicals. You need to keep levels of Vitamins C and E in your body high, either by eating lots of fruit and vegetables or by applying Vitamin E as a cream.
