No nonsense answers to questions we are often asked
What does the SPF figure mean and what doesn't it tell me?
The SPF figure just gives an
indication of the amount of protection the sunscreen affords you from
UVb rays. SPF does not cover UVa rays. How much protection an SPF
offers depends not just on high the number is but also on your own
skin. That means that the level of protection that you get
from say an SPF 15 may be very different from the level of protection
gained by your neighbour. As a rule of thumb, you should use an SPF
of 15 or more to achieve reasonable protection. But it is still
important to know how your own skin reacts to sunlight.
